Until 1866, and before vanilla processing, Antalaha was a modest fishing village. The town's port location contributed to the development of the region: the coast here is favorable to shipping, and Antalaha lies close to the mouth of the Ankavanana, a large navigable river. Today, Antalaha is a town of around 40,000 inhabitants. It's warm (average 24°C) and humid all year round. The rainy season lasts from December to April, with heavy downpours. Then comes the dry season, from May to September, aided by the trade winds. Almost every year, in January and February, cyclones ravage plantations and forests.
