The modest village of Miandrivazo is the starting point for excursions on the Tsiribihina. The name means "I am waiting for my beauty". It was here (220 km west of Antsirabe) that the great King Radama is said to have waited in vain for his betrothed, Princess Salima, daughter of the Sakalava king with whom he wished to ally himself, unable to subdue him. He finally married her the following year at Tsiroanomandidy. Numerous stories and legends evoke the mythical image of this woman, who brought the island's different regions closer together in the early 19th century. Miandrivazo isn't usually a place to stay, especially as it's very, very hot! The main street is lively.
