Halfway between Ampanihy and Ambovombe, Tsihombe is the perfect base for a getaway to a site that's a little difficult to access, at the extreme southern tip of Mada: Tanjona Vohimena (known as Cap Sainte-Marie). Here, in a spectacular setting, immense cliffs plunge into the ocean. Tsihombe is a pleasant little town to spend the night, or as a base for visiting the water sapphire mines. To reach the latter, take the northeast track. 10 km further on, huts line up to the crest of the hill. At the top, the ground is hollowed out with multiple holes and galleries from which the sound of hammer blows escapes. This is it.
