Orapa is home to the famous diamond mine that propelled Botswana to become one of the richest countries in Africa. The town was founded in 1967, when the diamond deposit was discovered, to house the miners. Operated by Debswana, the mine officially opened in 1971. The mine and the entire town are very secure, surrounded by three gates in some places. You will need a permit from Debswana to enter the town. This permit will entitle you to a guided tour of the mine, tracing the diamond mining process and presenting the history and current state of this lucrative industry.
