In the southern parts of Makgadikgadi, Letlhakane, which means "little reeds" in Setswana, is known for its diamond mine operated by Debswana since 1977. It is the company's deepest mine in Botswana, generating more than 800 jobs. In 2017, open-pit mining ceased and was replaced by the tailings treatment plant, extending its life until 2043. With a population of about 25,000, the city can be a stopover for travellers on their way to Lekhubu or Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. There are several good quality lodges and hotels, ideal for a night's rest.
