The most beautiful jewel of the Pans region, Lekhubu Island, is of rare beauty. It is best to spend a night there to enjoy a beautiful sunset and sunrise. The janitor of the place indicates to the visitors the camping sites, which are available and at a very low price. Located southwest of Sowa Pan, at the entrance to the peninsula that almost connects the latter depression to the Ntwetwe Basin, this fascinating rocky island is covered with phenomenal baobab trees, offering a magnificent landscape. But it is above all its astonishing presence in the middle of the immense basin which seizes the traveler. To find perfect serenity, climb to the top of a boulder to meditate facing the emptiness of the pan and then travel the relief of the island on foot. As evidenced by remnants of stone walls, this island was home to a civilization believed to be attached to the empire of Great Zimbabwe. Today, it remains sacred to the San people who still visit it regularly. Lekhubu Island is managed by the O Gank Community, based in the beautiful village of Mmatshumo. This community is assisted by various NGOs, such as Bocobonet and the African Development Funds. To date, the community has about 600 members and receives only 600 visitors per year! In addition to having the island almost to yourself, you will encourage this good local initiative. Beware: the access roads are not easy. Go with a guide, or get information before going on the tracks.
