Located 85 miles northwest of Amarillo, the small village of Dalhart (population about 8,000) is not of major tourist or economic interest. However, at the end of the 19th century, the offices of the largest ranch in the world were located there. The village museum tells its story. Founded in 1901, Dalhart owes its name to its location on the border of Dallam and Hartley counties. The city was founded on the site of a railroad junction, which, like many small Texas towns, contributed greatly to its initial growth. Dalhart is now surrounded by agriculture.
