Today, this frontier town at Exit 0 of I-40 is almost completely abandoned. As you drive along the original Route 66 through the town, all you find are the remnants of old motels andold motels and dilapidated gas stations. The asphalt gives way to dirt a few hundred yards away.Glenrio was born around 1905 as a farming community. The town flourished in the 1920s and a newspaper was published here until 1934. Some scenes from John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath (1940) were even filmed there. However, its location on the border of two states served Glenrio well: for example, there were no bars on the Texas side because the state was "dry", as we still say today, and no resorts on the New Mexico side because of the higher taxes.
