Known locally as the "Grand Canyon of Texas", it is not only the largest canyon in Texas, but also the second largest canyon in the United States. Its length is 193 km. Its deepest gorges reach a depth of 250 m. Formed more than a million years ago, when the Red River made its bed, it allows today to admire geological formations older than 250 million years. Although rocks dominate, the canyon is not devoid of flora and fauna. Palo Duro means "hardwood" in Spanish. This refers to junipers, common in the Rockies.
