The city was named in honor of "Colonel" B. B. Groom (1812-1906), an English cattleman who imported Shorthorn and Angus cattle. By 1906, the town was thriving with a bank, hotel, school and several businesses. Groom suffered two major fires in 1912 and 1915. By 1928, the town's streets were paved and the main street received Route 66. Approaching Groom, it is impossible to miss the Britten USA water tower, tilted to attract the eye and curiosity of travelers, nor, a little further, the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, erected in 1995 and supposed to protect the road from the height of 58 m.
