His name is often mentioned in history books. And for good reason, Nacogdoches participated in the birth of the Texas state. It was the scene of three battles, which were all failures in the rebels' quest for independence, before a significant success in 1832. Texas would become independent four years later. Some people claim that this is the oldest city in Texas, established by settlers from Europe in the early 18th century. There is no real proof that it was indeed the first Texas town, but Nacogdoches is still steeped in history. A tour of its beautiful downtown will convince you of this.
