Travel Guide Parc D’akanda

Akanda is a protected area covering 54,000 hectares. Located to the northeast of the city of Libreville, the park encompasses the Mondah Bay and is home to mainly coastal wetlands and a small portion of rainforest, with specific plants such as strophantus and hanging mosses. There are a variety of orchids, which bloom mainly from October to January, lianas and ferns. As for the trees, we can see the large specimens of the very humid forests of which the okoumé is a part.The mudflats of the park represent an important area for the passage of migratory birds. Some of them land only briefly, like the pelicans; others stay more regularly in the park's fish-filled bay. This is the case of herons, egrets, ibises, Episcopal storks and African spoonbills. A large number of waders and terns gather in September on the islets of the bay, in front of the mouth of the Moka River The fauna of Akanda Park differs from that of Pongara. The large mammals are absent and the species present are few, hunting and deforestation activities having made them disappear for the most part. There are monkeys, rarely the pangolin and the sitatunga. As for the marine fauna, apart from whales, fishes, molluscs and crustaceans, with a lot of luck you can see manatees in the Mondah bay. Hawksbill and green turtles gather in Corisco Bay, sometimes accompanied by the olive ridley turtle.
