Pinta (60 km²) takes its name from one of Columbus' caravels. It was discovered in the 15th century by Bishop Tomas de Berlanga. Totally isolated, this uninhabited island is rarely visited. It was once populated by goats which caused the disappearance of the turtles that lived there. Only one specimen was saved, the famous Lonesome George, which was transferred to the Darwin station in Puerto Ayora. More than a hundred years old, he was a local star until his death in 2012. He was desperately presented with females to ensure his progeny, without success... Otherwise, the island is known for its steep cliffs rising nearly 100 m above the sea.
