355 km southwest of Quito, 24 km from Montecristí. Capital of the province of Manabí, Portoviejo is a large industrial and active city, without real tourist interest. Founded in 1535 by Captain Francisco Pacheco under the name of San Gregorio de Puerto Viejo, one of the oldest cities in Ecuador is famous for its many tamarindos that adorn its parks and gardens. From a tourist point of view, we do not recommend Portoviejo, because this city is mainly an important crossroads, just like its neighbour Manta. They are both still rebuilding from the 2016 earthquake, by the way.
