Surfers come from far and wide because from December to April, the long beach of Montañita rolls out a roll of about 200 m on the bottom of the reef (beginners beware!). During this period, the water is warmer and the wind is almost non-existent. National and international surfing competitions are held here every year in February. The fishing village has exchanged its calm for a resolutely touristy - and festive - atmosphere Hotels, restaurants and bars are springing up like mushrooms in a rustic and local style (wood, bamboo and palm roofs) and often offer basic comfort at modest prices. The prices are more moderate than those of other beaches of the coast. The clientele is rather backpackers, international, young and sporty (or not!). The atmosphere of the village is friendly, and every evening it is time to party. The dirt streets are unnamed and quickly turn into a quagmire when it rains. From morning to night, stalls of all kinds of crafts invade the village; at nightfall, the terraces fill up, the music volume increases, each bar turning up the volume to attract customers. However, you should know that the atmosphere is no longer as good-natured as it used to be; mass tourism has indeed led to certain excesses linked to partying: drugs and alcohol now tarnish the picture postcard. For more peace and quiet, head for La Punta, 1 km from the main street. The road that goes up north along the Pacific Ocean passes through small traditional fishing villages. When the boats are resting on the sand under their palm canopies, the fishermen are busy repairing the nets, while the women sell fish, crabs and shrimps on makeshift stalls. All along the coast there are fishing villages, beautiful beaches and hotels.
