Inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, the Valley of the Ingenios (Valley of the Sugar Mills), also known as the Valley of San Luis, bears witness to the central role played by the sugar industry in the development of Trinidad and its region. Visiting the valley will allow you to understand quite quickly the extent of the exploitation of slaves by the Europeans. After three centuries of tobacco cultivation and an important contraband trade, the region turned to the sugar industry in the 18th century. In 1827, the area had 56 sugar factories. Today there are only a few mills left.
