Capital of the eponymous province with its 170,000 inhabitants, La Perla del Sur has not stolen its qualification and knows how to spare its guests. In July 2005, its historic center was recognized as a world heritage site by UNESCO. The beauty of its bay, the deepest in the country, extends over 88 km² and welcomes, at the end of April every year, the competitors of the Saint-Nazaire-Cienfuegos regatta. In addition to its access to the sea, it also boasts a charming downtown area, where the abundance of neoclassical architecture makes it a city apart in Cuba. It was the favorite city of Benny Moré (1919-1963), one of the greatest Cuban singers and a native of the region.
