Kislovodsk was established in 1803 by order of Alexander I. The previous populations of the region, the Kabards and Balkars, had established villages on this site, although they did not reach the size of a city. It is one of the main towns of the Kavkazskie Mineralnye Vody ("Mineral Waters of the Caucasus") region which, stripped of its strategic interest, is rich in romantic strolls. At the foot of the Caucasus, Kislovodsk is a pleasant little spa town with 136,000 inhabitants that has retained its early 20th century charm. The central pedestrian streets and the park are well worth a visit, and the whole place is worth a 2-3 day stop to enjoy the fresh air and the benefits of the waters.
