With its 305,000 inhabitants, Murmansk is the largest city north of the Arctic Circle. It's not a pretty town, but it's a nice place to live and a useful base for exploring the Kola region. You will meet scientists, fishermen, travellers from the far reaches, and a lot of musicians: Murmansk is lively with lots of opportunities for outings and excellent museums. With its incredible atmosphere of a city on the other side of the world, it feels like time stands still. Murmansk is strategically important because of its ice-free harbour. Murmansk was destroyed by the Luftwaffe in 1942. The heroic resistance of its inhabitants earned it the title of "Hero City" (Gorod-Geroy).
