Beppu is a port of 150,000 inhabitants that has acquired a sulphurous reputation over the centuries. The city has developed at the bottom of a beautiful bay dominated by mountains. One of these, the Tasaki yama, separates it from Ōita. The springs of Hell(Jigoku) have definitively linked the name of Beppu with thermalism. More than three thousand springs are listed according to their specificity: smell, heat, color, bubbles, explosion, sludge, detonation... Their temperature can vary from simple to triple, up to 500 degrees and more. The city is also very photogenic, with its columns of steam that invade the streets. At nightfall, the atmosphere even becomes a bit mystical. Although Beppu offers an unparalleled range of baths to indulge in, many of the spectacular hot springs can be enjoyed... from a distance. Beppu is a hell of a spring.
