This area is located about halfway between Nobeoka and Mount Aso. It is famous in more ways than one, since it was in one of these caves that, according to the Kojiki, the Sun Goddess, Amaterasu Ōmikami, took refuge. The dance performed there is considered the original Kagura dance. Its name is yokagura, or the "Kagura of the night", because once the sun goddess was locked in this cave, the world plunged into night. These sublime volcanic gorges in the middle of which flows the Gokase River are breathtaking
