This small town, with its outdated train station, seems peaceful. However, it was in the news in the 1960s when it was discovered that fish contaminated by mercury in the water had infected children and caused deformities (Minamata disease). Many people died after eating the mercury-fed fish. Thanks to the photos that alerted the civil authorities, this pollution case had such an impact on the whole world that the Diet passed an emergency law that established the anti-pollution standards.
