Tsuwano is a city built in the mountain. It was once the center of a feudal lordship and the grand residences of merchants and warriors still line the main thoroughfares of the town. It is known as the little Kyōto of the West with its hundreds of Taikodani-Inari torii and small temples. The ruins of the castle on the heights of the city dramatize the landscape and remind us that many Japanese, converted to Catholicism, were tortured there at the beginning of the Meiji era. With its numerous canals and old monuments dating from the Edo period, Tsuwano is a very pleasant stopover. It is also famous for its steam train, which connects it to Ogōri and Masuda, its sake and ceremonies, the traditional Sagi Mai (heron dance) and the mounted archers' dance.
