This small castle town is located in the mountains of Okayama Prefecture. Its nickname is Bitchu Takahashi, after the old name of the province of Bitchu. The town is only about a 40-minute train ride from Okayama on the Yakumo Line, making it an easy day trip. Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is one of the 12 original castles still standing in Japan. It is located at an altitude of 478 meters on top of a mountain. Don't miss the observation platform for great views. Also note the old samurai quarter, Ishibiya-cho, or the Raikyuji, a Zen temple, and the karesansui, a nice dry garden.
