This small island has an area of 18 km². It is dominated by Mount Tenjō, an extinct volcano. Most of the islanders make their living on the west side, mostly from fishing, ranching and tourism. Tako-wan Beach, Tōkyō-ji Temple, and a cemetery that houses the graves of fifty-seven feudal warriors are worth seeing. There are many minshukus and a few ryokan. This island is said to have given Mishima the inspiration to write his novel The Tumult of the Waves.
