HOLY CROSS DOOR (KRUISPOORT)
Door on the slope that follows the trace of the old walls, where the Clauwaerts' troop enters during the massacre of the Bruges Matins
Erected as early as 1297, the Porte Sainte-Croix still stands on the embankment that follows the trace of the old walls. Admittedly, much has changed since then: Philippe van Artevelde demolished and rebuilt it in 1382 after taking the city; its entrance gate was removed in 1760... But, along with the other gates, it is one of the city's key monuments. Find them all: Ezelpoort (donkey gate), Gentpoort (Ghent gate) and Smedenpoort (blacksmith's gate)!
