BORGO ANTICO E BORGO NUOVO
Go there and contact
New town in Taranto, bordered on the right by the Lungomare facing the Ionian Sea.
Borgo antico (old town). If you're arriving from Reggio Calabria, Naples or Bari, the route is the same: first you cross the station area, then the Ponte di Porta Napoli, which serves the Borgo antico island. The Via Duomo runs right through the city, with its many interesting buildings: the cathedral, the church of San Domenico Maggiore, ancient noble palaces and the beautiful university building. From this axis run narrow streets lined with buildings that are sometimes in an advanced state of disrepair. The two liveliest spots in the district are, on the one hand, Piazza del Castello, opposite the bridge leading to the modern city, and, on the other, the fishermen's corner, Via Cariati, towards Piazza Fontana, with its fishmongers, typical bars and a few fishermen's bistros. Come in the morning, when the crates are unloaded, to watch the fish auctions.
Borgo nuovo (new town). The swing bridge gives access to the new town, bordered on the right by the Lungomare facing the Ionian Sea, a beautiful promenade planted with palms, pines and oleanders. In line with the bridge is the lively Piazza Garibaldi, and to the left is the National Museum. Behind this, to the right, stretches the beautiful garden of Villa Peripato, from which you can see Mar Piccolo. Further out, at the end of Via Dante, the Concattedrale, designed by architect Gio Ponti and inaugurated in 1970, is shaped like a boat.
