A vast, state-of-the-art complex offering a clear, comprehensive overview of the Saami world via five exhibitions, a museum and examples of art
This vast, ultra-modern complex (whose name means "Saami village") welcomes over 120,000 visitors a year and offers a clear, comprehensive overview of the Saami world. Through five exhibitions, you'll discover everything that characterizes the Saami community in the various temporary and permanent exhibition halls that the museum houses.
These include examples of arts and crafts that speak volumes about the poetry of these peoples, long marginalized by the Nordic countries, as well as a historical retrospective, and information about their way of life (including an evolution in modes of transport from reindeer to scooters to snow scooters!) and their traditions in terms of clothing, camping and food. The flora and fauna are not forgotten, with a staging of the changes over the eight seasons of the year, with photos that vary in brightness according to the season and reconstructed habitats.
In summer and winter alike, the seven-hectare open-air museum is also a good illustration of the Saami habitat. A wonderful museum, educational and accessible to all. A fascinating museum not to be missed!
To complete the picture, numerous events are organized throughout the year, so don't hesitate to ask for information on site or via the online calendar. An adjoining cafeteria, Ravintola Sarrit, is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and serves high-quality buffet lunches (11 a.m.-3 p.m.).
