MONASTÈRE SAINT-GEORGES

This fortress-like Orthodox monastery (Manastiri Shën Gjergjit) was founded in the ^14th century and gives its name to the hamlet of Manastiri. Located at the top of Dema hill, 80 m above sea level, it offers views over Corfu and Lake Butrint. Transformed into a vacation camp during the Communist era, the complex still has the monks' dormitory with its arcades and the church, where traces of frescoes remain. A "guardian" is sometimes on hand to give tours.
