Ksamil/Ksamili, also known as Εξαμίλια/Examilia in Greek, has a population of around 9,000. The town is part of the municipality of Saranda and Butrint National Park. It lies 4 km north of the Butrint archaeological site and 10 km south of Saranda. Frequent connections from Saranda.Often referred to as the "pearl" of Albania's coastline, this seaside resort does indeed boast an enviable position. Situated on an isthmus in the protected area of the Butrint National Park, it is bordered by the Ionian Sea to the west and the salt lake of Butrint to the east. The bay and its many small beaches offer splendid scenery, with the islets of Ksamil and, behind them, Corfu less than 2 km away. But Ksamil grew too fast. Emptied of its population during the Communist era, the former Greek village of Examilia (the name comes from the Byzantine "six miles" that separate it from Saranda) became a citrus-producing area and was home to Enver Hoxha's summer residence. However, since its repopulation in 1991 (now 45% Greek), it has become a chaotically urbanized town, invading every nook and cranny of the shoreline. In the 2000s, the authorities did demolish 200 illegally-built buildings - some of the carcasses still line the streets - but Ksamil has little charm left. In the absence of a sewage treatment plant, wastewater is discharged into the turquoise sea.
