This village, located 400 km northwest of Fairbanks, owes its name to Gordon Bettles who established a trading post there in 1900. Starting point of excursions in the Arctic National Park, visiting it is the occasion to dive into the bush, at a lower cost, because the road arrives here, finally a gravel track from Fairbanks built to transport oil coming from the North. The village has 25 houses, native Americans and non-natives. The school closed in 2002 due to lack of students. The climate is continental with extreme temperatures: if it can be 20°C in summer, in winter the mercury can drop to -40°C.
