Sitka has a long history since it was for a long time the object of discord between Indians and Russians before becoming American. Thus, the ethnic influences are very marked in this small port located on the island of Baranof. Today it has less than 9,000 inhabitants, but during the Second World War, up to 30,000 civilian and military inhabitants lived there following the installation of an American base. The town's economy is based on commercial fishing, forestry, hunting (which is disappearing) and tourism. It has a remarkable marine fauna and a magnificent nature, including Mount Edgecumbe, an extinct volcano culminating at nearly 1,000 m altitude.
