Sitka National Historical Park, the oldest in Alaska, exhibiting totem poles with highly symbolic figures.
The oldest national park in Alaska, created in 1910 to celebrate a battle between the Russians and the Tlingit Indians. The Tlingit Indians fought to defend their wooden stronghold before abandoning the site for lack of ammunition. Tlingit art is on display in the park, including totem poles with highly symbolic figures. One can admire a beautiful collection of totem poles, some of which were transported to an exhibition in Saint-Louis, Louisiana in 1904.
