A focal point for thousands of prospectors after the discovery of gold nuggets in the Bonanza River in the late 19th century, the population is said to have grown to 30,000 (compared to 1,300 today). This city was the largest hub in the West after San Francisco. Of course, fortunes could be made by digging in the mud, but those who channeled the gold into providing entertainment for the thousands of men in town were the real founders of Dawson City, which maintains this memory today. A memory of the excitement of the past, when gambling houses and saloons were open day and night.
