The city is built along the Niger River between two hills. An alley of cheese trees welcomes you at both ends of the city, as well as a one-lane metal bridge (at the entrance coming from Mamou). Faranah is famous above all for being the birthplace of Sékou Touré. As such, it enjoyed a certain prosperity and was long privileged under theFirst Republic. But today, it has fallen back to the rank of a simple prefecture. It is now better known for its Agronomic and Veterinary Institute, which is quite active locally, notably through the development of experimental crop areas along the river.
