Legnica (100,000 inhabitants) is a city that lacks charm. Halfway between Zielona Góra and Wrocław, it has been an important industrial center since a copper deposit was discovered nearby, and the war has left indelible traces. Nevertheless, Legnica was one of the capitals of the Silesian Piasts, as well as the seat of the first Silesian university, and a city renowned in its time for arts and culture, before the Austrian invasions. The partition of 1745 gave it to Prussia. Poland recovered it in 1945, in ruins. It can be used as a starting point to explore the region, mainly Legnickie Pole.
