This town of around 17,000 inhabitants is the former capital of an episcopal duchy and the former seat of the Warmian bishops. From 1503 to 1510, Nicolaus Copernicus stayed at the castle as secretary, advisor and physician to Bishop Łukasz Watzenrode, his uncle. Bishop Ignacy Krasicki, one of Poland's greatest Enlightenment writers, himself stayed here for thirty years. The town is also famous for the Battle of Heilsberg, which pitted Napoleon against Prussia and Russia. Today, Lidzbark Warmiński is a service and commercial center with an agricultural vocation. This quiet town is rich in vestiges of a glorious past.
