At the eastern end of historic Pomerania, Elbląg was the first port of the Teutonic Order and a strategic trading point. After the Treaty of Toruń and its annexation to Poland, Elbląg became one of the country's main ports. The first Polish galleon was built here in 1570. Later, the Swedish invasion ravaged the town, and the silting-up of its port led to its decline, until its industrialization at the end of the 19th century by the Prussians. The last war completely destroyed the city. With 125,000 inhabitants, it is nonetheless a major urban center and a key stop-off point for exploring Masuria.
