The racecourse was launched in 1946 by Gabriel Lefranc and has been hosting horse races since 1950. In 1991, it was renamed in tribute to its founder. Over the years, numerous works have been carried out to improve the facilities, including the refurbishment of the ring and the construction of a new grandstand.
