A large port of the Caribbean coast at the mouth of the Río River, Bluefields is a chaotic city… yet quite fascinating. It's the "capital" of the Caribbean coast in a way, and no other city looks like it near or far. It is also the oldest: it was built in 1602 by the English and their preferred. His name evokes the Dutch pirate Henry Bluefeldt who amarra it around 1610. However, the region began to be truly colonized until the end of the th century. During the banana boom boom in the th century, many Jamaica Caribbean Afro-Caribbean (notably) were brought to work on plantations. Chinese immigrants also settled there at the beginning of the th century, forming one of the largest Chinese communities in Central America. however, most left the country during the civil war of the 1980 s.Hurricane Joan almost completely destroyed the city in October 1988. Since then, it remains between sea and lagoon, improbable, disorganized, negligent. An air of past splendour is still there. If you are in Nicaragua in May, it would be a pity not to attend the celebrations called «del Palo de Mayo», showered dances to the sound of the drums that animate the city and the parent of a thousand warm and intoxicating colours. Delusions sometimes and in any case a genuine festival that will not let you sleep.
