Like many Burmese cities, Bago has mythical origins. A long time ago, the site was submerged, except for a tiny plot: the current Bago Hill which dominates the whole city. This piece of land would have served as a refuge for a mythical bird, hintha. The tiny island became a hill that was called Hinthagon, the "refuge of the hintha". The Mon who first settled in Bago, created in 825 BC. Burmese, then Mon capital, then Burmese, Bago was finally annexed to Ava, until the British colonization in 1852. To appreciate Bago, don't stop at the scrap metal bridge that disfigures its centre: rent a bicycle and leave the capernaum. Take to the quiet little streets of the surrounding neighbourhoods. Weaving workshops, cheroot factories or woodworking are part of the village atmosphere of the surroundings. The horn of the lorries gives way to the oxcarts
