High place of pilgrimage of Burmese Buddhism, the Golden Rock is very touristic. Almost exclusively a local tourism, but also from Thailand or Korea. The Kyaiktiyo pagoda was built more than 2,500 years ago. The Golden Rock Pagoda or Golden Rock Pagoda is located 1,102 m above sea level. It is said to be one of the wonders of the world because of the balance of this enormous rock on a thin sloping surface. According to some, the shrine was built during Buddha's lifetime, on one of his hairs. The hermit who collected it would have kept the hair mixed with his own until he found a suitable place to keep it: a head-shaped rock. Others claim that the rock, lifted up from the sea by angels, only holds its balance at the edge of the void thanks to the hair. Around it, streets are dotted with shops selling religious souvenirs, astrologers and other healers, and small cafés.
