Also known as "Sioma Falls", in reference to the nearest village, Ngonye Falls is a spectacular site of waterfalls, rapids and rocky islands that cross the Zambezi River for 1 km, about 2 hours drive and 130 km from Shesheke and the Namibian border upstream. Discovered by Livingstone two years before Victoria Falls, Ngonye Falls is not very high, but its flow is impressive, especially between January and July. The main waterfall is formed by a semicircle of cascades flowing between the basalt blocks, forming here and there small natural pools. Without the famous Victoria Falls some 200 km below, this site of great beauty would be a major attraction.
