Located near the Vietnamese border, some 30 kilometres from Sam Neua, this town of 33,000 inhabitants seems to have fallen asleep on its laurels. In 1973, it was here that the headquarters of the "liberated" zone was set up, both the administrative capital and the stronghold of a communist regime, then in full expansion. Today, the glorious history is already long gone and the city looks like a ghost town in places. However, Vieng Xai has an undeniable natural charm, with its ponds scattered in the middle of a plain dotted with rocky promontories. Travellers come to Vieng Xai to visit its famous caves.
