Renaissance and Baroque complex featuring an imperial hall, a painting gallery and a magnificent rose garden.
This residence castle is an architectural complex combining Renaissance and Baroque styles, consisting of four zigzag-shaped wings. It was the seat of the Bishops' Court of Bamberg for almost 200 years. The foundation stone was laid in 1603, after which the various prince-bishops have continually redesigned the New Residence. At the turn of the century 1802-1803, the episcopal principality of Bamberg was annexed by Bavaria and the church property was secularised: the castle became the property of the Wittelsbachs and several members of the family lived here, including Otto I of Greece, who was in exile after being ousted from his throne. With the revolution of 1918, the reign of the Wittelsbach dynasty came to an end. With Munich in chaos, the newly elected Bavarian government and parliament fled to Bamberg to escape the turmoil and took up residence in the Neue Residenz. After their departure, the Neue Residenz was opened to the public.
Among the most impressive places in the castle are the Imperial Hall(Kaisersaal) with its fresco by Melchior Seidl, the painting gallery with works from the Middle Ages, Baroque and Renaissance styles.
Finally, the rose garden(Rosengarten) offers a breathtaking view of the city and the St. Michael's Monastery on the hill to the northwest. This magnificent rose garden of the residence (43 types of roses) also has a beer garden where you can refresh yourself with a beer in the sun, while re-discovering the world.
