Bamberg, the city of seven hills, founded over a thousand years ago and often referred to as Franconian Rome, has won us over. Unlike most other German cities of the same size, Bamberg's medieval and Baroque town planning was miraculously spared almost entirely from the bombing raids of the Second World War. The entire old town, comprising three historic quarters - Bergstadt (hill town), Inselstadt (island town) and Gärtnerstadt (garden town) - has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Intact and particularly well-preserved, it provides an extraordinary example of a Central European city built on early medieval structures. The cathedral and its famous Bamberg Cavalier, the Old Town Hall and the picturesque houses of Little Venice are just three of the many sights to discover. Market gardening is still practiced in the gardens of the Gärtnerstadt. You couldn't find fresher produce! The city's symphony orchestra, the Bamberger Symphoniker, enjoys an excellent worldwide reputation, and its jazz scene is astonishing. Bamberg is also a sporting sensation: since 2005, its basketball team, Brose Bamberg, has won the German championship eight times, including in 2016. Some 8,000 students have chosen the city. The atmosphere is young, dynamic and cultural. The nightlife is rich with street parties, bars, restaurants, jazz clubs and discos, where alcohol flows freely since Bamberg is known for its traditionally produced beers. Today, the city boasts nine breweries, while Munich has six... Local beers include Bockbier, a strong beer drunk in winter to keep out the cold, and Rauchbier, a smoked beer that tastes strangely like smoked ham!
