The cathedral's interior houses the statue of Lachender Engel, a well-known sculpture, tombs and the prince's portal.
Bamberg Cathedral, or Bamberger Dom in German, was built at the behest of Emperor Henry II (Henry the Limping, of the Ottonian dynasty), who founded the bishopric of Bamberg in 1007. In 1012, the first cathedral was blessed, but was destroyed by fire, as was its successor... Construction work on the third project was not completed until 1237. In architectural terms, the cathedral is not a stylistically uniform building. It was built in a transitional style between late Romanesque (east side) and early Gothic (west side) in the first half of the 13th century. The interior is superb: the north wing houses the statue of the Lachender Engel (The Smiling Angel). Nearby, the city's best-known sculpture, the Bamberger Reiter(Bamberg Horseman), created around 1230, has yet to reveal all its secrets. Not only is the identity of the artist unknown, but also the name of the young king depicted... At the end of the nave sits the huge tomb of Henry II and Cunégonde. Five reliefs depict legends from the life of the imperial couple. Opposite, the tomb of Pope Clement II is adorned with paintings representing Justice, Moderation, Wisdom and Bravery. Finally, don't leave without finding the prince's portal: its tympanum depicts the Last Judgment, and on either side are the prophets of the Old Testament and the apostles of the New Testament.
