Located 40 km from Passau, on the Czech border, Zwiesel is also known as "die Glasstadt", the city of glass. This industry is predominant. Indeed, as early as 1421, the first company specialising in the manufacture of glass was set up. Today, this sector still employs more than 2,000 people. In July 1997, the then Chancellor Helmut Kohl inaugurated the "glas Strasse" of the Bavarian forest: the glass road. It extends from Weiden in der Oberpfalz in the north to Passau. Many factories are open to the public. We discover the complexity and magnificence of the profession of master glassmaker.
