A protected area that is a nesting place for various birds in Akureyri
The estuary of the river Eyjafjarðará is divided into two parts: Leira (the clay banks) and Hólmar (the islets). It was here, in the largest meadows in Akureyri, that winter fodder for the cattle was cut. Today, this area is protected and Leira is a nesting place for various birds. Between the end of winter and the beginning of spring, grey seals (from the Greenland ice pack) can be seen. Whales, too, may occasionally swim up the fjord to Hrísey Island.
