At 2 p. m. in Río Caribe, you arrived in the easternmost city of Venezuela that we can reach by road, currently populated by about 40 000 souls. It was founded on 8 December 1767. It was in 1793 that Don Manuel de Navarrete gave him a second breath by settling with merchants, peasants, sailors, and their slaves. All these brave people spoke then of patois, because of many French emigrants, as evidenced by the surnames Boyady, Bompart, Boulanger, Lacroix or Bideau that we still find today. It is now an active port, for its fish and perhaps also for smuggling with the nearby island of Trinidad. The economy of the Guiria region is still waiting to resume further development with the construction of the largest gas Pipeline in Latin America, which should link Guiria to the Brazilian city of Manaus and southern Brazil. As Chávez says: " I believe that this pipeline will serve as a hub for energy integration on the South American continent. According to experts, the construction of this pipeline over 8 000 km long will cost $ 20 billion and must take five to seven years. Venezuela intends to provide Brazil and Argentina. The pipeline would go through the Orinoco and the Amazon, from Manaus to Recife and thence, according to Chávez, an offshoot to Brasilia to continue in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro before finishing in Montevideo and Buenos Aires. We have been waiting for eight years…
